The ballet “RASPUTIN” and the great Sergei Polunin with his cast, wowed the Belgrade audience on September 7, 2024. The world-renowned ballet dancer, artist, choreographer and actor performed again in Belgrade, at the Opera & Ballet Nights festival.
The ballet “Rasputin” was created in Belgrade, where rehearsals were also held, and after more than 70 performances in different countries, the Belgrade audience had the opportunity to see this spectacle in the renovated Blue Hall in the Sava Center.
The story is sharp, thoughtful and interpreted in a quick manner. It is exciting to watch, powerful and beautiful. All stage elements are complementary to the story – movement, music, scenography, costume. The performance was masterful as was the play of light and sound on stage.
A talented rebel
Polunin was born and educated in Ukraine and then in Great Britain. A member of the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden, at only 19 years old he became the youngest champion in the history of that company. He conquered the world with his performances with almost all the world’s biggest ballet ensembles.
He played almost all leading roles in classical ballets on the stages of the most important theaters around the world: Royal Ballet London, La Scala, Teatro Arcimboldi, ABT in New York, Bolshoi in Moscow, Mariinsky in St. Petersburg, Colosseum, Palladium and Royal Albert Hall in London, Arena in Verona and other world scenes.
He is also known for his rebellion against the establishment and calls to take classical ballet out of elitist circles and bring it closer to true art lovers. Polunin is rumored to be an ideal combination of the 3 greatest artists in the history of ballet, Misha Barashnikov, Vaclav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev.
A year after Polunin became a Serbian citizen in 2017, the “Sergei Polunin Foundation” was founded in Serbia, which supports young talents in the field of ballet, providing them with the opportunity to study at the most prestigious International Ballet Academies and participate in the Foundation’s productions.
